General 68k News icon myoldmac.com - Find Apples - made easy ! - 03 Mar 2010

With the economy in the tank, you or someone you know is probably putting off the decision to buy a new Mac. But what about a used Mac? Sure, it doesn’t have all the glitz of a shiny new unibody MacBook, but an older-generation MacBook might just do the trick for a lot less money. Heck, you’d be surprised at how well an older iBook G4 can still handle just about everything that you might want to do.

Please visit my new project: www.myoldmac.com ! If you’re looking for a used Apple Macintosh or Mac-compatible peripherals, at myoldmac.com you can find a solution that fits your budget.

General 68k News icon Happy 55th birthday, Steve Jobs! - 24 Feb 2010

Happy 55th birthday, Steve Jobs!

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 -

Today is Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs' 55th birthday. Jobs was born on February 24, 1955. Steve Jobs was a college dropout when he teamed up with Steve Wozniak in 1976 to sell personal computers assembled in Jobs' garage. That was the beginning of Apple, which revolutionized the computing industry and made Jobs a multimillionaire before he was 30 years old. He was forced out of the company in 1985 and started the NeXT Corporation, but returned to his old company in 1996 when Apple bought NeXT. Jobs soon became Apple's chief executive officer and sparked a resurgence in the company with products like the colorful iMac computer, [Mac OS X, the iPod, and the iPhone]. Jobs was also the CEO of Pixar, the animation company responsible for movies like Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. Pixar was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 2006 for $7.4 billion in stock; the deal made Jobs the largest individual shareholder of Disney stock. Some sources list Los Altos, California as Jobs's place of birth. However, in a 1995 oral history interview with The Smithsonian, Jobs said, "I was born in San Francisco, California, USA, planet Earth, February 24, 1955." Jobs was given up for adoption after birth and raised by his adoptive parents in Silicon Valley... His biological sister is novelist Mona Simpson, author of "Anywhere But Here."

General 68k News icon Thumb drive made out of an old Apple keyboard - 04 Jul 2009

If you’re sick of all these new Apple fanatics and you want to show them all that you’ve been a diehard fan since the early days, even sticking by the company through Newton and Pippin, then this thumb drive made out of an old Apple keyboard is for you.

Ingredients: an old Apple keyboard, a thumb drive you’re willing to destroy, some workbench-y tools and whatnot, time.

The basic process then involves gutting a regular thumb drive, carving out a notch for it to fit into inside an old Return key, and grabbing the Apple logo from another area of the keyboard. Sand, cut, glue, solder, slice, etc. and you’ll eventually have yourself a nice retro USB thumb drive.

Please observe the detailed directions at Instructables. My directions were NOT very helpful and may result in massive bleeding. By www.instructables.com

Apple Lisa Operating System Reference Manual (PDF, 1983)

The Apple Lisa from 1983 was the first consumer-class computer with a graphical user interface and significantly more advanced than the 1984 Macintosh, which had a similar UI, but a comparatively primitive underlying OS. Here, I present a searchable PDF of the rare “Operating System Reference Manual for the Lisa” (1983), as well as a quick overview of the OS and how it compares to UNIX.

myoldmac.net icon Happy Birthday Macintosh! 25 insanely great years... - 24 Jan 2009

hampsApplehamps

In late 1983, people began seeing odd commercials on TV, commercials which promised a new kind of computer. One that promised (borrowing from the Orwell novel) 1984 won't be like Nineteen Eighty-Four."

Happy Birthday Macintosh! 25 insanely great years...

General 68k News icon The Ultimate Apple II Font by Rebecca Bettencourt - 30 Dec 2008

The Ultimate Apple II Font

Download the world's most complete Apple II text font, in TrueType format. Works on Mac OS X, Windows, or any operating system that supports TrueType.

Also download the corresponding keyboard layout for Mac OS X, called IN Number Zero. Option key enables access to inverse characters. Control-Shift enables access to MouseText characters.

Additional characters have been added to the font to support all of ISO-Latin-1, Windows ANSI, and MacRoman, as well as box drawing characters and other miscellaneous Unicode characters. These additional characters have been modeled after the actual accented characters on international versions of the Apple II where possible. MouseText is encoded at 0x80-0x9F, and at the appropriate Unicode code points where possible.

General 68k News icon RetroChallenge Winter Warm-up on for Jan 1/09 - 16 Dec 2008
It's that time again, retrogeeks... the RetroChallenge Winter Warm-up* is officially on for Jan 1/09. For those new to the RetroChallenge, it's a chance for retrocomputing enthusiasts to show off their skills (or lack thereof)... it's an excuse to forego the complexities of modern technology and relive the glory days of 8-bit processors and monochrome monitors... an opportunity to trade in the iPhone for a Newton... a chance to impress the ladies with your stunning command of FORTRAN... you get the idea. Unlike the Summer* RetroChallenge the WInter Warm-up is a less competitive event... think of it as a show-and-tell for retrogeeks. If it sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to check out the rules (such as they are) and announce your intention to enter. retrochallenge.net

APPLE COMPUTER'S FIRST TRADE SIGN For sell is the very first sign used by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak to promote their fledgling start-up, Apple Computer Co. at the first trade shows they attended in 1976, and which remained in service for years outside the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California. The sign measures an impressive 100" long x 22 1/2" tall, and its original weathered wood frame is about 1 1/2" thick.
