I've got a Mac Portable, the vendor said it is working. But where do I switch it on? I can't find a switch.
If I open the computer, I find at the backside a connector like for a 9 V batterie. It is for a Pram-batterie? It is really for a common 9 V batterie? |

If you wonder what Mac we are talking about here, its the first "portable" Macintosh, along with the "portable" SE seria.
I found the Service Manual for the Portable:

Sadly the start procedure is not described (but some battery facts).
I look at home for the Manual for the Portable and get back later.
The small Battery is the so called Backup Battery (it is the RAM cache battery) ,
please look in the Developers Notes for the voltage.

* Godwin <godwin@unixg.ubc.ca> says, "If the acid battery dies, one can bypass it and convert the Portable into a luggable. One needs 2 AC adapters -- the original one and a 9V DC adapter. Take out the 9V DC battery and replace it with a 9V 1A power adapter. Then remove the battery and cover (there is a switch at the battery cover which we need to disable). Plug the two adapters in and viola! one of the sleekest Macs on anyone's desktop!"
* One user has reported success replacing a dead Conner CP-3045 hard drive with a standard Conner CP-3044 that had been formatted under System 6.0.8.
* You can use a PowerBook 100-series AC adapter to run the Portable without the internal lead-acid battery. However, you will lose PRAM settings if you unplug the power (date, time, cache size, etc.)
Cautions
 Never use a version of Apple HD SC Setup newer than 7.3.1 (which comes with System 7.0.1) or your Portable will crash while waking from sleep mode.
Battery becomes unusable if discharged below 5.4V; keep it charged!
 Hard drive will not spin up without a charged battery installed.
* The Mac Portable does not provide SCSI termination power, depending on external SCSI devices to provide it. For more details, see SCSI Termination Power.
* Macs with black-and-white only displays (1-bit, no grays) may find Netscape Navigator 3 makes it impossible to view some pages and sites. The workaround is to use Navigator 2.
* Serial port limited to 57.6 kbps; use of a 56k modem may be limited. See 56k modem page.
* Apple has discontinued support and parts orders for this model. You may be able to find dealers with parts inventory either locally or on my parts and service list.

| Klasse! Danke f¸r die Hinweise! Ich habe vorhin den Akku mal gemessen, 5,1 Volt liefert er. Das Netzteil liefert noch die angegeben 7,5 V. 8 Stunden laden sagt Apple... |

After 8 hrs of loading the batteries I've managed to boot MacOS 7.01 from floppy-disk, after playing with the reset-buttom. Unfortunally the hd seems to be dead, but that's not such a big problem. Just some work to make an adaptor for the strange 34 pin SCSI-connector.
BTW: Is it true, that the 2,5" hds in the early Powerbooks was SCSI, too? |

Let me know the results.
Yes, it seems that the first PowerBooks had an internal SCSI,
but the HD must be a smaller one than normal ones?
